Principal's Message

This year’s school theme: “Living, Celebrating, and proclaiming our faith."

Welcome Back!  I hope you had a restful summer vacation.  We are a school community that encourages students to seek excellence in everything they do; in all aspects of their lives.  We always seek continuous improvement and strive to be our “best selves.”  Parents we invite you to become active members in our school community.  It is only with the support and dedication of many people that St. John Paul II can be the wonderful place it is to learn and grow in.  May God bless you, guide you, and give you wisdom and strength this school year and always.

JPII History

Together we are making a difference for children in the Port Alberni Valley.

We are the youngest of the 5 Island Catholic schools. We opened in September 2005 with a population of 37 students in grades K – 7. We had 3 classrooms with 4.24 teachers. We have grown to 5 divisions, 110 students, and a teaching staff of 7 and support staff of 6. There is a wonderful, happy spirit between staff, students, and parents. St. JPII is a special place to learn and grow.

Parishioners, volunteers, the Knights of Columbus (Alberni and Parksville/Qualicum), the CWL (Alberni and Parksville/Qualicum), our sister schools, the Diocese of Victoria, the Parent Support Group, and the Local School Council, all contribute to the success of St. JPII. Many of these people continue to give and to share on a regular basis to assure the continuance of Catholic education in Port Alberni. Their efforts and generosity are most appreciated.

Hear From Our Teachers

“St. John Paul II is ‘the little school that could.’ It is a special place that has been built on relationships, dedication, and faith. Situated in the tight-knit ‘small-town’ community of Port Alberni, the school has been blessed with a dynamic and caring faculty, a supportive and active parent community, and a joyful and engaged student body. Framed by the beauty of Mt. Arrowsmith and the Beaufort Range, St. John Paul II is surrounded by many of the wonders of God’s Creation as lakes, rivers, forests, trails, and beaches are all readily accessible. St. John Paul II is an integral part of its community and to Island Catholics Schools as a whole and I feel most fortunate to be a contributing member and, as such, privy to the wonderful opportunities the school and community provide”

Security

Safety is an important aspect of St. JPII. There is staff supervision of students before and after school. A classroom teacher supervises the children outside for their 15 minute recess in the morning and two educational assistants supervise the students during their noon hour play outside between 12:00 and 12:40 p.m. There are two people on duty wearing a reflective vest and carries a knapsack containing a first aid kit, walk-talkie, and other essentials. Extra curricular activities that are held during the noon hour are supervised by teaching staff and parent volunteers.

Our school building is equipped with a PA system in the classrooms, hallways, washrooms, and extra rooms such as the library and gymnasium. This speaker/microphone system enable messages to be sent throughout the school for information and/or emergencies. There are phones in every room. We have video recording cameras in the school and we have policies in place for utmost security. Everyone working in our school has a current criminal record check.

Fire drills, earthquake drills, and internal lock downs are practiced and rehearsed regularly. Emergency kits and comfort bags are kept in each classroom. Also, we have earthquake kits stored in a secure location outside our school building. Several staff members have first aid certificates.

Transportation

St. JPII has a 54 seat bus. It is used to transport classes on field trips and to take the entire school to our local parish for our monthly liturgies. Nominal fees are collected by those using the bus for field trips.
